We had such a great weekend. On Saturday we went with the Svatek-Pine and Pine clan to eat tamales and see La Befana at Heart of the Beast. The show was lovely visually and otherwise and Augie and Felix’s reactions were priceless. After the show, and a snack of bread and butter in the lobby, Nicola suggested we start a trend of children who believe in La Befana instead of Santa Claus. I don’t know if we can totally jettison S Klaus ,or, as Augie calls him, “Christmas” given his ubiquity (we ran into him in the Rainbow parking lot on Saturday) but I was really moved by a telling of the nativity in which the manger is empty and the epiphany or “befana” is that all children (even grown up ones) are holy. Spending some time with friends remembering that is a holiday ritual I can get behind. I hope we make it a tradition.
On a lighter note, Augie and I went sledding in Matthews park this afternoon and the following exchange happened as Augie whizzed down a hill solo:
Peter: You seem really terrified.
Me: Yep.
The photo above is Augie hauling his sled back up the hill. He didn’t need help, he said. He did let me pull him home, though. After several spills, we figured out that lying down flat was the ideal position for being pulled long distances.
